I always think I want to revert to saying I like alternative music, but if you look at the playlists that supposedly represent “alternative” music, it’s not what I’m into. I consider it more mainstream rock, at this point. 120 Minutes on MTV had a compilation called, “Nevermind the Mainstream,” and that kind of sets the tone for what I feel like alternative music represents.

Thanks for including a link to my post on Medium. At this point, I’m wondering why I would pay for a yearly subscription when I have no idea what the service will look like in a year.

When I think of "alternative rock," the first music that comes to mind is definitely the type of music that you'd hear on something like "Never Mind the Mainstream" (e.g., Ministry, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Hüsker Dü, Violent Femmes). As such, it's very much a descriptor that means anything (to me, anyway) only in hindsight and nostalgia.
