Subscriber Playlist, May 2024: I Will Retire
Celebrating the music of indie-folkster Damien Jurado, who’s apparently closing up shop this year.
Recording and releasing music consistently since the mid ’90s, Seattle-based singer/songwriter Damien Jurado is one of the premier indie-folk musicians working today. His warbling voice, poignant lyrics and heartfelt storytelling, and variety of recording techniques — which range from lo-fi and experimental to glossy studio production — make for a discography filled with enough memorable and moving songs for a dozen other songwriters.
To call Jurado “prolific” would be an understatement. To date, he’s released 25 albums and numerous EPs and singles on such labels as Sub Pop, Secretly Canadian, Burnt Toast Vinyl, Made in Mexico, Tooth & Nail, Acuarela, and his own Maraqopa Records. But all good things come to an end, it seems.
