Back in the ’90s, the now defunct German label Hyperium Records released a series of compilations under the Heavenly Voices moniker. These compilations spotlighted bands in the goth, industrial, neofolk, and other related genres that were fronted by female singers.
I discovered this vein of ethereal music through Projekt Records — which carried Hyperium’s catalog here in the States — and indeed, several Projekt artists (e.g., Black Tape for a Blue Girl, Love Spirals Downwards, This Ascension) appeared on Heavenly Voices volumes.
This month’s playlist represents my own attempt at curating a Heavenly Voices-type compilation. But it does come with two caveats.
